How do you burnout-proof your life?
In this episode, I continue the burnout theme from episode 9, and share 3 practical ways to avoid burnout.
Note: I burned out at my last job and it was because I failed to apply these practices.
Don’t make the same mistake I did!

EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
00:00:00.240 –> 00:00:04.640
<v SPEAKER_1>Welcome to The Leader Assistant Podcast, episode 10.
00:00:05.080 –> 00:00:06.940
<v SPEAKER_1>Thank you for being a leader.
00:00:07.280 –> 00:00:09.200
<v SPEAKER_2>Today’s quote is from Tony Blair.
00:00:10.120 –> 00:00:13.280
<v SPEAKER_2>The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes.
00:00:13.820 –> 00:00:15.660
<v SPEAKER_2>It is very easy to say yes.
00:00:18.920 –> 00:00:26.620
<v SPEAKER_2>The Leader Assistant Podcast exists to encourage and challenge assistance to become irreplaceable, game-changing leader assistants.
00:00:29.840 –> 00:00:32.120
<v SPEAKER_1>And here’s your host, my dad.
00:00:32.140 –> 00:00:36.980
JEREMY: Hey everyone, welcome to episode 10 of The Leader Assistant Podcast.
00:00:37.460 –> 00:00:45.480
JEREMY: In episode 9, we talked about how to recognize burnout and four signs that you’re approaching burnout.
00:00:46.180 –> 00:00:51.520
JEREMY: You can check that episode out at leaderassistant.com/nine.
00:00:52.640 –> 00:00:57.120
JEREMY: So the first way to avoid burnout is to set boundaries.
00:00:57.240 –> 00:01:06.340
JEREMY: And you’ll kind of see a running theme in these where these are the things that I did not do when I burned out at my last job.
00:01:06.940 –> 00:01:17.760
JEREMY: So this is kind of, again, more hindsight is 2020, learning from my mistakes and hoping to share what I’ve learned with all of you so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.
00:01:17.940 –> 00:01:21.440
JEREMY: Setting boundaries is the first way to avoid burnout.
00:01:22.060 –> 00:01:26.100
JEREMY: Many of us work evenings, weekends, and even on our days off.
00:01:26.800 –> 00:01:29.960
JEREMY: So if we don’t have any boundaries, we’re going to burn out.
00:01:30.280 –> 00:01:39.180
JEREMY: I wrote a blog post to executives urging them to leave their assistant alone during their off hours and to set boundaries.
00:01:39.940 –> 00:01:45.000
JEREMY: I’ll share that link in the show notes at leaderassistant.com/10.
00:01:45.420 –> 00:02:08.000
JEREMY: I think setting boundaries like, hey, we’re not going to email or text each other or call each other unless it’s an absolute emergency after five o’clock or after eight o’clock on Monday through Thursday and after five o’clock on Friday, or hey, I’m not going to expect you to reply to any emails after seven p.m.
00:02:08.020 –> 00:02:08.680
JEREMY: each night.
00:02:09.520 –> 00:02:10.920
JEREMY: And until seven a.m.
00:02:10.940 –> 00:02:11.760
JEREMY: the next morning.
00:02:12.400 –> 00:02:15.900
JEREMY: Another way you could do it is Friday at five p.m.
00:02:15.900 –> 00:02:17.700
JEREMY: till Sunday at five p.m.
00:02:18.140 –> 00:02:21.000
JEREMY: is kind of your Sabbath, if you will.
00:02:21.800 –> 00:02:25.500
JEREMY: It’s your time off from email and communication at work.
00:02:26.260 –> 00:02:28.060
JEREMY: Again, unless there’s an absolute emergency.
00:02:28.300 –> 00:02:34.060
JEREMY: Now, just to talk about emergencies or things that can be urgent or seem urgent.
00:02:34.520 –> 00:02:36.080
JEREMY: Urgent is rarely urgent.
00:02:37.280 –> 00:02:52.320
JEREMY: So make sure that you are setting expectations with your boss and with your team that help you all be on the same page when it comes to these are the types of things that are urgent and these are the types of things that are not urgent.
00:02:52.640 –> 00:03:02.880
JEREMY: Otherwise, you’re going to treat everything as urgent or many executives tend to treat every task or every issue as urgent, and that’s not the reality.
00:03:03.940 –> 00:03:14.240
JEREMY: So the second way that I found that I should have done and what I’ve been able to do since my burnout to avoid burnout is to find a hobby.
00:03:15.480 –> 00:03:19.560
JEREMY: So do you regularly spend time doing something you enjoy other than work?
00:03:20.700 –> 00:03:25.060
JEREMY: If you don’t have a hobby, you may end up working on your days off simply because you’re bored.
00:03:25.740 –> 00:03:29.820
JEREMY: So find a hobby that encourages your mind to create and cultivate.
00:03:30.480 –> 00:03:34.380
JEREMY: And watching Netflix does not count as a hobby, just FYI.
00:03:35.260 –> 00:03:41.080
JEREMY: So for me, I realized thinking back, I was like, why did I always work on my days off?
00:03:41.680 –> 00:03:46.120
JEREMY: Why couldn’t I rest and enjoy my days off?
00:03:46.140 –> 00:03:48.420
JEREMY: And why did I just hop right into work?
00:03:48.600 –> 00:03:50.600
JEREMY: Well, the problem was I didn’t have a hobby.
00:03:51.060 –> 00:03:55.400
JEREMY: So I wanted to do something engaging and interesting and use my mind.
00:03:55.520 –> 00:03:59.980
JEREMY: So I ended up working because I just did not have a hobby.
00:03:59.980 –> 00:04:06.880
JEREMY: And so anyway, spending time on a hobby is one of the most practical and powerful things you can do to avoid burnout.
00:04:07.480 –> 00:04:09.560
JEREMY: And I’ll include a list of hobbies.
00:04:10.420 –> 00:04:13.500
JEREMY: And, you know, if you’re drawing a blank, you can Google it.
00:04:13.520 –> 00:04:15.900
JEREMY: There’s tons of different hobbies out there.
00:04:16.080 –> 00:04:23.640
JEREMY: But I’ll include a list that I wrote more on the on the topic of hobbies in the show notes at leaderassistant.com/10.
00:04:24.060 –> 00:04:36.220
JEREMY: But whether it’s riding a bike, writing a book, reading, crafts, playing sports, yoga, whatever it is, you’ve got to find a hobby if you want to avoid burnout.
00:04:37.120 –> 00:04:40.220
JEREMY: So taking time off is the third way to avoid burnout.
00:04:40.700 –> 00:04:48.900
JEREMY: And we talked about this in episode seven of The Leader Assistant Podcast at leaderassistant.com/seven.
00:04:49.380 –> 00:04:50.820
JEREMY: If you want to refresh on that.
00:04:51.480 –> 00:04:55.580
JEREMY: But just to reiterate, when is the last time you took a real vacation?
00:04:56.320 –> 00:05:03.080
JEREMY: One where you did not check your email, one where you did not call a co-worker to see how things were going.
00:05:03.660 –> 00:05:08.540
JEREMY: There was an article in The New York Times that said Elon Musk hadn’t taken more than a week off.
00:05:08.980 –> 00:05:12.680
JEREMY: Since 2001, and that was only because he was bedridden with malaria.
00:05:13.280 –> 00:05:14.860
JEREMY: So don’t be like Elon Musk.
00:05:15.020 –> 00:05:18.380
JEREMY: Let’s stop pretending the world revolves around us and let’s take our vacations.
00:05:19.460 –> 00:05:37.720
JEREMY: So to recap, if you want to avoid burnout, the three things that I’ve done since my crash and burn that have really helped is to set boundaries, find a hobby and spend time doing that hobby and to take time off.
00:05:38.060 –> 00:05:38.960
JEREMY: I hope that was helpful.
00:05:39.800 –> 00:05:41.540
JEREMY: I’d love to hear what your hobby is.
00:05:42.040 –> 00:05:46.720
JEREMY: You can email me at podcast at leaderassistant.com to let me know what your hobby is.
00:05:47.420 –> 00:05:55.080
JEREMY: And here’s to recognizing and avoiding burnout so we can accomplish our goals without sacrificing the enjoyment of our lives.
00:05:56.000 –> 00:06:02.800
JEREMY: And I will share another link in the show notes at leaderassistant.com/10 for a little bit more on burnout.
00:06:02.820 –> 00:06:06.820
JEREMY: And that’s an article I wrote called Ten Driving Forces Behind Burnout.
00:06:07.200 –> 00:06:14.500
JEREMY: And that’s something that my executive and I worked through as kind of what are the things that drive us to burnout.
00:06:14.980 –> 00:06:18.780
JEREMY: So you can check that out again at leaderassistant.com forward slash 10.
00:06:18.940 –> 00:06:20.680
JEREMY: So thanks for listening to episode 10.
00:06:20.880 –> 00:06:24.680
JEREMY: I’m really glad to have gotten to episode 10.
00:06:25.440 –> 00:06:27.540
JEREMY: It’s been a fun, fun month or so.
00:06:28.100 –> 00:06:31.020
JEREMY: And I’m really looking forward to the next few episodes.
00:06:31.040 –> 00:06:39.580
JEREMY: I’ve got a couple of awesome guests coming up, including the former executive assistant to President Ronald Reagan.
00:06:39.600 –> 00:06:42.160
JEREMY: That’s going to be an exciting interview.
00:06:42.340 –> 00:06:45.980
JEREMY: So again, subscribe at podcast.leaderassistant.com.
00:06:47.180 –> 00:06:51.100

JEREMY: And basically what we’re doing is we’re sharing tips and tricks.

JEREMY: We’re talking about the episodes.
00:07:03.740 –> 00:07:11.800
JEREMY: And I’m just trying to encourage people to meet each other and listeners to meet other assistants and help each other out and really encourage and challenge each other.
00:07:12.620 –> 00:07:19.700
JEREMY: And then also just going to do some bonus content and Facebook lives periodically in that Facebook group.
