Burnout is tricky because it can creep up on us when we least expect it. If I had seen my, or my previous executive’s, burnout coming–and understood its consequences–I would’ve tried to prevent it. Instead, it took him getting fired and me getting stuck in the middle of my career glacier for me to realize how unhealthy I was.
In this episode, I share an excerpt from my audiobook, The Leader Assistant: Four Pillars of a Confident, Game-Changing Assistant, where I talk about the dangers of burnout creep for executive assistants and administrative professionals.

<v SPEAKER_2>The Leader Assistant Podcast exists to encourage and challenge assistants to become confident, game-changing leader assistants.
00:00:16.660 –> 00:00:18.360
JEREMY: Hey, friends, thanks for tuning in.
00:00:18.800 –> 00:00:21.940
JEREMY: You are listening to The Leader Assistant Podcast.
00:00:22.080 –> 00:00:27.520
JEREMY: I’m your host, Jeremy Burrows, and for this episode, I’m going to share an excerpt of my audiobook.
00:00:28.440 –> 00:00:35.000
JEREMY: My book is called The Leader Assistant, Four Pillars of a Confident, Game-Changing Assistant.
00:00:35.020 –> 00:00:40.940
JEREMY: This book and audiobook, there’s also a digital e-book or paperback version.
00:00:41.700 –> 00:00:46.520
JEREMY: So whichever medium you’d like to soak in your books, you can do so.
00:00:47.340 –> 00:00:58.680
JEREMY: But The Leader Assistant outlines four pillars, embody the characteristics, employ the tactics, engage in relationships, and exercise self-care.
00:00:59.620 –> 00:01:08.680
JEREMY: These pillars will help you rediscover your passion for the profession and become a confident, future-proof, game-changing leader assistant.
00:01:09.220 –> 00:01:15.440
JEREMY: If you neglect even one pillar, you’ll head for burnout, stagnation, and anonymity.
00:01:16.320 –> 00:01:18.880
JEREMY: You are meant for so much more.
00:01:19.440 –> 00:01:22.560
JEREMY: Are you ready to be the leader assistant the world needs?
00:01:23.300 –> 00:01:29.660
JEREMY: In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about Burnout Creep for executive assistants.
00:01:30.200 –> 00:01:36.960
JEREMY: I’ll tell a little bit about my story of burnout, and I hope you enjoy episode 151.
00:01:36.980 –> 00:01:42.820
JEREMY: The show notes can be found at leaderassistant.com/151.
00:01:43.840 –> 00:01:44.340
JEREMY: Enjoy!
00:01:45.940 –> 00:01:53.400
JEREMY: Chapter 23 Burnout Creep Do something, but don’t do everything.
00:01:54.500 –> 00:02:07.840
JEREMY: Anonymous As I dug a hole in my executive’s backyard for his soon-to-be-dead dog, the same dog who had a thing for my leg as a puppy more than a decade prior, I had mixed feelings.
00:02:09.220 –> 00:02:13.640
JEREMY: On one hand, I was glad to help my executive and longtime friend while he was out of town.
00:02:15.220 –> 00:02:21.520
JEREMY: His in-laws were dog-sitting but weren’t physically capable of burying the poor dog if it were to pass on their watch.
00:02:23.160 –> 00:02:27.560
JEREMY: On the other hand, I had a sense something wasn’t right about the whole scenario.
00:02:28.680 –> 00:02:35.240
JEREMY: Yes, I was the executive assistant and personal assistant, but was I being taken advantage of in this moment?
00:02:36.180 –> 00:02:40.540
JEREMY: If not, were there other times I had been asked to do tasks that crossed the line?
00:02:41.640 –> 00:02:43.320
JEREMY: Was I too willing to serve?
00:02:44.860 –> 00:02:48.980
JEREMY: Unfortunately, I didn’t stop long enough to answer my questions that day.
00:02:50.180 –> 00:02:54.980
JEREMY: Instead, I pushed them aside and kept sticking my executive’s shovel into the dry dirt.
00:02:57.100 –> 00:03:02.080
JEREMY: Another dog and a few years later, I was in the passenger seat of that same executive’s truck.
00:03:03.020 –> 00:03:05.640
JEREMY: We were on our way to pick up his kids from school.
00:03:06.980 –> 00:03:10.640
JEREMY: He noticed something was bothering me and asked if I was okay.
00:03:12.000 –> 00:03:16.120
JEREMY: Not really, I said, as I explained that I was exhausted and burned out.
00:03:17.060 –> 00:03:19.840
JEREMY: He said he wondered why I had been such an asshole of late.
00:03:20.920 –> 00:03:22.520
JEREMY: It sounds harsh, but he was right.
00:03:23.340 –> 00:03:28.980
JEREMY: We’d been running at an unsustainable pace for a while, and I hadn’t been myself because of it.
00:03:30.500 –> 00:03:32.140
JEREMY: I didn’t have anything left in the tank.
00:03:33.080 –> 00:03:38.120
JEREMY: Something needed to change quickly, or I was going to continue to be an unpleasant person.
00:03:39.440 –> 00:03:45.720
JEREMY: He suggested I work remotely from my hometown of Kansas City that next month, which happened to be during the Royals’ playoff run.
00:03:47.260 –> 00:03:53.560
JEREMY: This gave me freedom to be with my family and friends and attend Royals baseball games, one of my favorite things to do.
00:03:54.980 –> 00:03:57.560
JEREMY: I attended every game in Kansas City that October.
00:03:58.600 –> 00:04:05.280
JEREMY: I even had the opportunity to be at games four and five of the World Series in New York City to see the Royals win it all.
00:04:05.900 –> 00:04:07.400
JEREMY: A lifelong dream come true.
00:04:08.720 –> 00:04:16.240
JEREMY: To this day, I’m grateful my executive gave me time and space to slow down and separate myself from harmful work rhythms.
00:04:17.280 –> 00:04:23.420
JEREMY: I’m not sure I would have lasted much longer without quitting, or something worse, if not for that month of working remotely.
00:04:24.720 –> 00:04:28.760
JEREMY: A few months later, that same executive made mistakes that cost him his job.
00:04:29.440 –> 00:04:31.920
JEREMY: And burnout was a major contributing factor.
00:04:32.820 –> 00:04:36.640
JEREMY: I wish I could say that he and I are the only people I’ve seen damaged by burnout.
00:04:37.660 –> 00:04:47.400
JEREMY: Unfortunately, I know several people with destroyed relationships, careers, families, physical and emotional health, and more, all due to burnout.
00:04:48.800 –> 00:04:52.100
JEREMY: When you burn out, you don’t think straight or see clearly.
00:04:53.180 –> 00:04:54.340
JEREMY: Your body shuts down.
00:04:55.240 –> 00:04:56.180
JEREMY: You get desperate.
00:04:56.860 –> 00:04:59.220
JEREMY: You say and do things you’ll regret.
00:05:00.420 –> 00:05:03.940
JEREMY: And unfortunately, burnout doesn’t just jump out and announce itself.
00:05:05.540 –> 00:05:11.540
JEREMY: Burnout Creep Burnout is tricky because it creeps up when you least expect it.
00:05:12.700 –> 00:05:20.200
JEREMY: If I had seen my or my previous executive’s burnout coming and understood its consequences, I would have tried to prevent it.
00:05:21.000 –> 00:05:27.760
JEREMY: Instead, it took him getting fired and me getting stuck in the middle of my career glacier for me to realize how unhealthy I was.
00:05:29.200 –> 00:05:34.580
JEREMY: I worked long hours because I was addicted to the rush of accomplishing tasks and helping others.
00:05:36.160 –> 00:05:40.380
JEREMY: I was too willing to serve, even when I was being taken advantage of.
00:05:41.480 –> 00:05:46.160
JEREMY: I rarely took a day off, and when I did, I saw it as an opportunity to work more.
00:05:47.480 –> 00:05:52.360
JEREMY: Being busy was my excuse to be lazy when it came to caring for myself and my family.
00:05:53.560 –> 00:05:57.320
JEREMY: Work was my life, a slow cooker recipe for burnout.
00:05:59.420 –> 00:06:05.060
JEREMY: Work is no longer my life, but I still love to work, so I’ll always have to fight burnout creep.
00:06:06.480 –> 00:06:09.960
JEREMY: For example, yesterday I planned to spend a few hours writing.
00:06:10.900 –> 00:06:13.960
JEREMY: As I sat down at my laptop, I realized I was exhausted.
00:06:15.000 –> 00:06:21.920
JEREMY: But instead of pushing through my exhaustion like I do so often, I closed my laptop and spent the rest of the day with my family.
00:06:23.060 –> 00:06:25.960
JEREMY: It was a small but powerful attack on burnout.
00:06:27.040 –> 00:06:31.480
JEREMY: I had an amazing time connecting with Meg and the boys, and the next day I was re-energized.
00:06:33.540 –> 00:06:42.740
JEREMY: Limiting the Effects of Burnout This is where I’m supposed to reveal a list of tricks to help you eliminate any chance of burnout.
00:06:43.820 –> 00:06:49.040
JEREMY: Well, I hate to break it to you, but if you’re trying to be a leader, there’s nothing you can do to completely avoid it.
00:06:50.300 –> 00:06:53.720
JEREMY: If you haven’t already, you will burn out at some point in your life.
00:06:55.200 –> 00:06:58.900
JEREMY: In fact, burnout is the most common glacier you’ll face.
00:07:00.560 –> 00:07:01.400
JEREMY: But don’t lose heart.
00:07:02.200 –> 00:07:05.800
JEREMY: Exercising self-care will help you limit the effects of burnout.
00:07:07.480 –> 00:07:11.460
JEREMY: Your desire to do more and be more is not inherently bad.
00:07:12.960 –> 00:07:21.900
JEREMY: However, far too often a desire to produce ends up not producing anything but exhaustion, lack of clarity, and ultimately burnout.
00:07:23.160 –> 00:07:26.100
JEREMY: It’s time to hit the reset button before you crash and burn.
00:07:28.100 –> 00:07:32.640
JEREMY: We’re going to explore the following elements of self-care to wrap up our journey.
00:07:34.640 –> 00:07:37.380
JEREMY: Recognizing the stressors that can drive you to burnout.
00:07:38.500 –> 00:07:41.520
JEREMY: Spotting the signs of burnout taking root in your life.
00:07:42.540 –> 00:07:45.560
JEREMY: Resisting burnout with five practical antidotes.
00:07:46.760 –> 00:07:48.780
JEREMY: Let’s exercise self-care together.
00:07:50.160 –> 00:07:53.000
JEREMY: I hope you enjoyed this chapter from my book The Leader Assistant.
00:07:53.240 –> 00:07:58.300
