How long is your commute? Are you intentional with the time you have in your car, on the bus, or on the train?
Don’t waste your commute!
In today’s episode, I share some thoughts on this topic that I recorded (safely) while on my way to work one morning.

leader assistant episode 5

Check out this article in Bloomberg about the most expensive commutes in America.

If we realize how much our commutes cost us, we might just value the time a bit more and be intentional with how we use it!

EPISODE TRANSCRIPT

00:00:00.240 –> 00:00:05.500
<v SPEAKER_1>podcast.leaderassistant.com You’re listening to Episode 5.

00:00:08.540 –> 00:00:16.260
<v SPEAKER_2>The Leader Assistant Podcast exists to encourage and challenge assistants to become irreplaceable, game-changing leader assistants.

00:00:18.180 –> 00:00:25.640
<v SPEAKER_2>Today’s leadership quote is from the book Leaders, Strategies for Taking Charge by Bennis and Nanus.

00:00:26.380 –> 00:00:32.040
<v SPEAKER_2>Leadership is like the abominable snowman whose footprints are everywhere but who is nowhere to be seen.

00:00:32.060 –> 00:00:34.240
JEREMY: Hey, everyone.

00:00:34.260 –> 00:00:35.400
JEREMY: Welcome to Episode 5.

00:00:36.480 –> 00:00:43.100
JEREMY: Just wanted to share a couple thoughts on your commute to and from work every day.

00:00:43.120 –> 00:00:44.380
JEREMY: It’s a lot of time.

00:00:44.400 –> 00:00:46.360
JEREMY: Some of you, it’s an hour each way.

00:00:46.840 –> 00:00:48.640
JEREMY: Some of you, it’s 10 minutes each way.

00:00:49.080 –> 00:00:50.280
JEREMY: Some of you work from home.

00:00:50.320 –> 00:00:57.540
JEREMY: So maybe this is your commute to drop off your kids at school or to go to the grocery store.

00:00:59.160 –> 00:01:01.200
JEREMY: But most of you have a commute to work.

00:01:01.480 –> 00:01:12.780
JEREMY: And I just want to talk a little bit about how to be intentional with your time in your car or on the bus.

00:01:13.640 –> 00:01:20.760
JEREMY: And I’m going to share a clip that I recorded during my commute on my phone safely.

00:01:24.660 –> 00:01:28.840
JEREMY: I had it on speakerphone, just recording it, so my eyes were on the road.

00:01:29.520 –> 00:01:36.060
JEREMY: And yeah, I just recorded a couple thoughts on how to not waste your commute.

00:01:36.860 –> 00:01:38.760
JEREMY: So I hope you find this helpful.

00:01:40.040 –> 00:01:49.940
JEREMY: Again, thanks so much to everyone who has listened and subscribed to the podcast, and those who have reached out and thanked me and sent encouraging notes.

00:01:51.520 –> 00:02:01.280
JEREMY: Each and every one of you who have left a review on iTunes, I still haven’t cracked the top 100 in the business podcasts top list.

00:02:01.860 –> 00:02:10.060
JEREMY: But I’ve gotten to 108, I believe, and I’m really excited if I kind of find competition and a challenge fun.

00:02:10.140 –> 00:02:17.460
JEREMY: So I’m really working hard to break that top 100 list and crack that list.

00:02:19.480 –> 00:02:22.480
JEREMY: So I appreciate any reviews or ratings you can leave.

00:02:23.440 –> 00:02:33.120
JEREMY: Share this with assistant friends that you have or executives who have assistants if they need ideas on how to improve their relationship with their assistant.

00:02:34.140 –> 00:02:37.520
JEREMY: And yeah, we’re scheduled.

00:02:37.540 –> 00:02:47.720
JEREMY: I’ve scheduled a couple of interviews coming up, really excited about and we’re going to record those and edit those and get those published as soon as possible.

00:02:48.460 –> 00:02:54.620
JEREMY: So yeah, check out this clip from my commute about how to not waste your commute.

00:02:56.860 –> 00:03:04.400
JEREMY: What are you doing with the time you have in your car or on the bus or on the train to and from work?

00:03:06.480 –> 00:03:17.100
JEREMY: Are you scrolling through Facebook and Twitter with a sort of mindless endless void of social media?

00:03:18.160 –> 00:03:19.080
JEREMY: Or are you reading?

00:03:20.380 –> 00:03:22.440
JEREMY: If you’re not driving, if you’re riding a bus, are you reading?

00:03:23.580 –> 00:03:25.040
JEREMY: Are you listening to an audiobook?

00:03:25.880 –> 00:03:27.480
JEREMY: Are you listening to podcasts?

00:03:29.340 –> 00:03:47.920
JEREMY: Are you using the quiet to think about what you need to do for the day, or to just kind of hit reset on the whole task list, fast-paced world around us?

00:03:50.600 –> 00:03:51.960
JEREMY: What are you doing with your commute?

00:03:52.340 –> 00:03:54.760
JEREMY: I just wanted to encourage you to be intentional with it.

00:03:55.900 –> 00:03:57.000
JEREMY: Try some different things out.

00:03:57.980 –> 00:04:04.520
JEREMY: Try being quiet all the way to work and see how that makes you feel when you get in to the office.

00:04:04.960 –> 00:04:13.220
JEREMY: Try listening to an audiobook that is maybe personally energizing to you.

00:04:13.280 –> 00:04:15.640
JEREMY: Maybe it’s not even a business practical book.

00:04:15.840 –> 00:04:17.600
JEREMY: Maybe it’s just energizing to you.

00:04:18.220 –> 00:04:19.340
JEREMY: Listen to a podcast.

00:04:20.140 –> 00:04:21.580
JEREMY: Maybe you’re listening to this podcast.

00:04:21.600 –> 00:04:22.660
JEREMY: Listen to other podcasts.

00:04:22.680 –> 00:04:24.820
JEREMY: Don’t just listen to assistant podcasts.

00:04:25.800 –> 00:04:28.540
JEREMY: Listen to leadership podcasts.

00:04:30.560 –> 00:04:31.960
JEREMY: Listen to business ones.

00:04:32.120 –> 00:04:37.340
JEREMY: Listen to podcasts that CEOs and executives and entrepreneurs listen to.

00:04:39.040 –> 00:04:42.680
JEREMY: The point is just be intentional and try different things.

00:04:43.320 –> 00:04:50.200
JEREMY: Really make good use of the time you have on the train, on your way to work, in your car, on the way home.

00:04:51.280 –> 00:05:00.480
JEREMY: And see how that changes your productivity, your focus.

00:05:01.720 –> 00:05:09.920
JEREMY: Don’t get distracted by, again, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, feed while you’re sitting on the train.

00:05:11.200 –> 00:05:12.400
JEREMY: Make good use of this time.

00:05:12.900 –> 00:05:27.400
JEREMY: And even listening to the radio sometimes, there’s so many advertisements on the radio, on your way to work that you may have a 25-minute commute, and 15 of those minutes are just listening to ads.

00:05:27.980 –> 00:05:31.820
JEREMY: It’s kind of mind-numbing advertisements.

00:05:32.760 –> 00:05:34.180
JEREMY: So again, just be intentional.

00:05:34.980 –> 00:05:36.300
JEREMY: Check out an audiobook.

00:05:37.060 –> 00:05:38.180
JEREMY: Try some silence.

00:05:38.800 –> 00:05:39.960
JEREMY: Try some podcasts.

00:05:41.280 –> 00:05:43.180
JEREMY: Do something with your commute.

00:05:44.980 –> 00:05:46.980
JEREMY: In other words, don’t waste your commute.

00:05:49.000 –> 00:05:50.480
JEREMY: Thanks again for listening, everyone.

00:05:50.720 –> 00:05:51.780
JEREMY: Hope that was helpful.

00:05:52.500 –> 00:05:53.560
JEREMY: Don’t waste your commute.

00:05:54.380 –> 00:05:58.020
JEREMY: So Administrative Professionals Day is on April 24th.

00:05:58.040 –> 00:05:59.040
JEREMY: It’s coming up soon.

00:05:59.900 –> 00:06:12.240
JEREMY: And I just wanted to let you all know that I have a discount on my How to Manage Constant Interruptions online course just for the rest of the month of April.

00:06:12.680 –> 00:06:16.020
JEREMY: You can check out information on that course at goburrows.com.

00:06:20.100 –> 00:06:21.760
JEREMY: And yeah, I would love to have you join.

00:06:22.000 –> 00:06:28.400
JEREMY: I go through 10 ways to manage and deal with interruptions that we all face day in and day out.

00:06:28.780 –> 00:06:32.560
JEREMY: So check that out, and hope to talk to you soon.
